Multi-GRAMMY® Winner Stanley Clarke Finds Creative Freedom on LAST TRAIN TO SANITY

“A little over 50 years since his solo debut, Clarke reminds the audience that there are still new ways to be dazzled by the innovative and solid fullness of his instrument.”
—NPR Tiny Desk
Multi-GRAMMY® winner Stanley Clarke has spent his career refusing to stay in one musical lane, and Last Train to Sanity continues that tradition on his own terms. Self-funded to give Clarke and his musicians complete creative freedom, the project moves through jazz, fusion and contemporary sounds while keeping his unmistakable bass voice at its center. More than five decades into a career built on exploration, Clarke sounds less interested in looking backward than in seeing where the music can still take him. The result is a personal, collaborative album shaped not by outside expectations, but by the musicians in the room and the ideas they wanted to pursue.
That collaborative spirit is central to Last Train to Sanity. Clarke has long made a point of bringing generations of musicians together, and here he once again creates space for both established players and emerging talent to contribute their own voices. The album also extends beyond the recordings themselves with Notes from the Journey, a companion photo book filled with photographs, stories and reflections on the people and experiences that have shaped Clarke along the way. Together, the music and book make Last Train to Sanity feel like something larger than a collection of tracks: it’s a snapshot of an artist still curious, still collaborating and, importantly, still determined to make music with complete creative independence. Listen below to "Medieval Overture," a song from the album that's competing in the Best Jazz Performance category for this year's GRAMMY® Awards.
Philadelphia-born bassist, composer, producer and bandleader Stanley Clarke is one of the defining figures in the evolution of the electric bass. From his groundbreaking work with Chick Corea in Return to Forever to an expansive solo career, Clarke helped establish the bass as a powerful lead instrument while moving freely among jazz, fusion, orchestral music and film scoring. His collaborations have included George Duke, Jeff Beck, Keith Richards, Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten and Stewart Copeland, while his composing career has extended extensively into film and television. A five-time GRAMMY® winner, Clarke has also made mentoring and showcasing younger musicians an important part of his work. With Last Train to Sanity, he adds another chapter to that legacy—this time with the freedom of knowing the journey, and the music, belong entirely to him.
