The overflowing stage featured a band of four trumpets, three trombones, five reeds, piano, bass and three percussionists that hum and sizzle like a V8 Buick.

The Steven Oquendo Latin Jazz Orchestra steps boldly into the spotlight with their debut release, A Centennial Salute to Tito & Tito. Captured live at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club, the album is a spirited homage to the centennial anniversaries of two towering icons of Latin music: Tito Puente and Tito Rodríguez. With the electric atmosphere of the performance fully intact, the recording reflects both the orchestra’s deep respect for tradition and its ability to bring timeless music to life for new generations.
Across the album, SOLJO channels the fiery energy of the Palladium Ballroom era with authentic arrangements that showcase the vitality of Puente and Rodríguez’s work. From the explosive rhythms of Puente’s “Antar Daly” to the infectious call-and-response of “Babarabatiri,” the orchestra delivers with precision, passion, and personality. Featuring dazzling solos from baritone saxophonist Pete Miranda and trombonist Michael Pallas, the recording not only pays homage to the past but also affirms SOLJO’s place among today’s leading Latin jazz ensembles. It's clear to see why it was named one of the Hot 5 Latin Jazz Picks from Latin Jazz Net, and why JAZZIZ calls it a "mesmerizing debut album."
Founded and led by trumpeter and educator Steven Oquendo, the Steven Oquendo Latin Jazz Orchestra has been a cornerstone of New York’s Latin jazz community for nearly 15 years.
