Paul Rafferty: A Modern Day French Impressionist Making an Impression on the World of Art

Paul Rafferty, a distinguished artist residing on the French Riviera, has garnered international acclaim for his evocative landscapes and vibrant cityscapes. A self-taught artist, he primarily paints on location, in oil, in the plein art style. Exhibiting at prestigious venues such as the Portland Gallery in London and his own gallery in St-Paul-de-Vence, Rafferty’s work captures the essence of his surroundings with a unique blend of impressionistic flair and meticulous detail. Born in Oxford in 1965, his artistic journey has been marked by a rich tapestry of experiences, including a stint as a recording artist in California, which has profoundly influenced his creative outlook.

Rafferty's latest venture includes a beautiful full-color book, Winston Churchill: Painting on the French Riviera, that showcases Sir Winston Churchill’s paintings in the South of France, showcasing his deep appreciation for historical art and the region's cultural heritage. He also made a significant contribution to commemorating Churchill's legacy through sculpture. On June 25th, 2024 at Pol Roger, Lord Soames, grandson of Winston Churchill, Randolph Churchill, Churchill’s great-grandson, and Hubert de Billy, a fifth-generation family member of Champagne Pol Roger, unveiled a striking two-meter bronze statue by Paul Rafferty of the famous British statesman. The piece, set against the backdrop of the recently inaugurated new Pol Roger building, depicts Churchill in front of an easel, painting his famous ‘Bottlescape’ (1926), with a Pol Roger ice bucket at his feet holding his favorite cuvée, Champagne Pol Roger Brut Vintage 1928.

His personal life is as vibrant as his art, shared with his beautiful wife Isabelle, their three children, and a beloved dog. With a life brimming with creativity and fulfillment, Paul Rafferty continues to inspire and captivate art enthusiasts around the world with his stunning visual narratives.
