Malcolm Todd sure sounds like he’s having fun on his latest super hit album, Do That Again. His new album brings classic pop into a modern R&B setting, with sharp songwriting, an easy sense of humor and the kind of intimate observations that make even the smallest moments feel song worthy. “I Saw Your Face” is an immediate standout, showing off Todd’s light, expressive vocal style and his ability to turn a personal encounter into something instantly relatable. His mega-hit, “Earrings,” has become one of his defining songs for good reason: melodic, understated and effortlessly catchy, it captures the conversational quality at the heart of his music. Todd performed both songs on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, giving “I Saw Your Face” its live debut, bringing a bedroom creation to an international stage.

With Do That Again, Todd writes from the perspective of someone young, newly untethered and occasionally reckless, trying to make sense of relationships and independence while life around him is changing quickly. Rather than polishing away those uncertainties, he makes them part of the appeal. The songs, with standouts, “Breathe” and “Difficult Love,” expertly balance pop hooks with R&B textures and a looseness that keeps the album from taking itself too seriously. It’s also easy to understand why Todd’s music works so well in a room full of people singing along: his songs may begin with highly specific moments, but he leaves enough space for listeners to find their own stories inside of them. Do That Again feels like a snapshot of an artist growing up in public—and getting increasingly good at turning that experience into pop songs.

Malcolm Todd first introduced his particular mix of pop, R&B and alternative songwriting with the 2024 mixtape Sweet Boy, which included “Earrings,” “Sweet Boy” and “Roommates.” He followed with his self-titled debut album, Malcolm Todd, featuring “Chest Pain (I Love),” before taking his music around the world on the Wholesome Rockstar Tour and onto festival stages including Camp Flog Gnaw, Pitchfork Paris, Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits. That time onstage has become an important part of his development, turning songs first written from an intensely personal perspective into shared experiences with an audience. With Do That Again, Todd brings all of those pieces together—pop songwriter, R&B vocalist and increasingly confident live performer—while holding onto the intimacy that made people pay attention in the first place. As the Los Angeles Times said, “Malcolm Todd is 22 with the whole world in front of him.” And we’re here for it!
