“Carrington is an extraordinary musician — full stop.” —GRAMMY.COM

Four-time GRAMMY® Award winner Terri Lyne Carrington and her genre-defying ensemble Social Science are back with Trip the Night Fantastic, their second album together, released on Candid Records. Blending jazz, hip-hop, R&B, spoken word and global rhythms, the album brings together an impressive group of musicians and vocalists to address some of today's most pressing social issues. From climate change and immigration to gender equality, identity and community, Carrington and her collaborators have created music that's as much about making people think as it is about making them move. And that's exactly what they set out to do. With its combination of infectious grooves and meaningful messages, Trip the Night Fantastic reminds us that music can entertain, inspire and encourage change, all at the same time.

The album opens with “Riddim Song,” featuring Fatoumata Diawara, Brenda Navarrete and Debo Ray, a multilingual celebration of African diasporic connections. “Identity Song,” featuring Michael Mayo, Nappy Nina and Brandee Younger, explores individuality and acceptance, while “Autonomy Song,” featuring Ledisi, Brandee Younger, Tarriona “Tank” Ball and J. Ivy, makes a powerful statement about women's independence. “Solidarity Song,” featuring Miki Howard and Larry Goldings, and “Abolition Song,” featuring Angela Y. Davis, Kassa Overall and Debo Ray, take on the importance of collective action and systemic change. Elsewhere, “Climate Song” addresses environmental concerns, while “Blues Song (These Poems)” draws on the words of poet June Jordan, with a contribution from spoken word artist aja monet. With contributions from artists including Arooj Aftab, Lizz Wright, Christie Dashiell, Marc Ribot and Moor Mother, the album offers plenty of musical variety while keeping its message of humanity, compassion and hope front and center.

Terri Lyne Carrington is a drummer, composer, producer, educator and activist whose career has helped expand the possibilities of contemporary jazz. A four-time GRAMMY® Award winner, she's known for bringing together musicians across generations and genres while using her platform to address issues of representation, equality and social justice. Her groundbreaking projects include The Mosaic Project, New Standards Vol. 1 and the GRAMMY®-nominated We Insist 2025! with vocalist Christie Dashiell. Carrington formed Social Science with guitarist Matthew Stevens, pianist Aaron Parks and multi-instrumentalist Morgan Guerin, releasing their GRAMMY®-nominated debut, Waiting Game, in 2019. With Trip the Night Fantastic, Carrington + Social Science continue their commitment to creating music with a purpose, proving that some of the most important conversations of our time can happen through music—and that there's nothing wrong with dancing while we have them.
