“Sutton’s success is based on her ability to spread her vocal talent across a wide spectrum of material, from traditional to contemporary and beyond.”

—Portland Press Herald

Nine-time GRAMMY® nominee Tierney Sutton returns with Talking to the Sun, a luminous cross-cultural collaboration with the celebrated French jazz duo Charlier/Sourisse and guitarist Serge Merlaud. Released on Gemini Records, the album blends Brazilian rhythms, French sophistication, and Sutton’s newly honed gift for lyric writing. What began as an experiment in putting words to a few Charlier/Sourisse compositions blossomed into an entire project—five original Sutton lyrics, plus fresh interpretations of works by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Guinga, and Djavan—offering a joyful and deeply personal exploration of language, music, and emotion.

Talking to the Sun takes listeners on a journey from tender lullabies to witty social commentary. Highlights include the title track, "Talking to the Sun," a radiant ode to ambition; “Les Étoiles de Léa,” a lullaby inspired by a blind child’s question, “What are stars?”; “Springtime, I’ll Be There,” a moving tribute to two friends lost; and “Laptop Choro,” a whirlwind anthem for the digital age. With grooves rooted in Brazil, melodies shaped in France, and lyrics penned in Los Angeles, the album radiates warmth and originality—a global conversation told through jazz.

At the center of it all is Sutton, known for her crystal-clear tone, fearless storytelling, and ability to reinvent standards with depth and grace. Here she’s joined by André Charlier (drums) and Benoît Sourisse (piano/organ), two of Europe’s most respected jazz musicians, and Serge Merlaud, Sutton’s longtime collaborator (in music and in life) whose guitar brings elegance and intimacy to the project. Together, this quartet proves what can happen when artistry, trust, and imagination meet across borders—an album that feels both timeless and brand new.
